Paying Your Fare

Compass is your key!

To travel on SkyTrain, SeaBus or West Coast Express, you need a Compass Card or Compass Ticket to open fare gates or to tap on a station validator.

You can keep using cash, bus transfers and FareSavers on buses, but you'll need Compass to transfer to rail or SeaBus.

Paying on the Bus

Cash fares require exact coin change and are inserted into the right-hand slot of the farebox. You'll receive a transfer that can be used on other buses, but not on rail or SeaBus. Only Compass Cards and Compass Tickets can be used on rail and SeaBus.

When you board using a Compass Card or Ticket, tap in at the card readers located near the bus doors when boarding. Remove the card or ticket from your wallet to avoid interference. Hold it flat against the card reader until you hear a beep and see a check mark to proceed.

If you're paying with a FareSaver (no longer sold) or bus transfer, insert them into the left-hand slot of the farebox with the arrow pointing down and the magnetic strip facing you. The machine will automatically tell you if your transfer is still valid (90 minutes from the time of purchase).

Paying on the SkyTrain or SeaBus

Before entering the Fare Paid Zone, purchase a Compass Ticket or Compass DayPass Ticket at the Compass Vending Machines (CVM). These machines accept debit, credit, coins and bills (up to $20).

The touch screen CVMs will ask you to select how many zones you are traveling through. Once you have paid, the CVM will dispense a Compass Ticket or Compass DayPass Ticket, which can also be used on buses. Tap in at the fare gates to start your journey and tap out to exit.

If you are using a Monthly Pass or Stored Value on your Compass Card, simply tap in at the fare gates to commence your journey. Remember to tap out so you are only charged the number of zones you have travelled.

Note: Compass Tickets and Compass DayPass Tickets purchased at CVMs are valid for that day only. You can purchase Compass DayPass Tickets for future use at Compass Retailers.

Validating you Compass Fare

Validating is easy with Compass. Simply tap in at card readers with your Compass Card/Ticket or Compass DayPass Ticket when starting your journey. Card readers are located at all SkyTrain and SeaBus fare gates, near bus doors, and at entry and exit points to West Coast Express stations.
